List Kubernetes resources with get

Kubernetes and K3s query tabs accept one command: get <resource> [namespace]. It lists objects of that type and returns a table with name, namespace, created and resource (the full object). Nothing is created, changed or deleted.

Supported resource types are pods, deployments, services, configmaps, events, nodes and namespaces.

Run a list

Click a resource type under the connection in the Explorer, for example pods. DevOpsPad opens a tab containing get pods and you can run it with ⌘ / Ctrl + Enter. You can also type a query yourself:

get pods
get deployments team-a
get services *
get configmaps kube-system
get events
get nodes
get namespaces

The optional second argument is the namespace. Without it, the tab’s namespace is used; * lists across all namespaces. nodes and namespaces are cluster-scoped and ignore the namespace. See Choose a Kubernetes namespace.

Read the result

Column Contents
name Object name
namespace Empty for cluster-scoped objects
created Creation time in UTC (RFC 3339)
resource The object as JSON, with managedFields removed

Use Filter results… to narrow the list, for example to Pods whose JSON contains CrashLoopBackOff. The filter searches every column of the fetched rows, including the JSON. See Filter, sort and inspect results.

Open an object

Double-click a row, or click the arrow next to its name, to open the resource inspector with Overview, Events, Logs (Pods only) and JSON tabs. See Inspect a Kubernetes resource.

The inspector also opens StatefulSets and DaemonSets when you reach them from a cluster’s workload list, but get does not list those types yet.

Errors you may see

Message Meaning
Use: get <resource> [namespace] The query has the wrong shape, for example kubectl get pods or extra arguments.
Supported: pods, deployments, services, namespaces, nodes, configmaps, events The resource type is not listed yet.
A forbidden server response Your account lacks list on that type. See Kubernetes permissions DevOpsPad needs.

Limits

  • A list returns at most 500 objects and at most 8 MiB of encoded data. If either limit is reached, the footer says the result is partial. Narrow by namespace to see the rest. See Why results stop at 500 rows.
  • No label or field selectors, no custom resources, no watch.
  • Queries time out after 20 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run kubectl commands like apply or delete in DevOpsPad?

No. Kubernetes and K3s query tabs accept only get <resource> [namespace] and only list resources. Changes to Deployments go through the Infra console, which uses reviewed plans.
